Where to buy alcohols and which one is best to run a car on.

I was thinking of buying a 1997 jetta 2.0 manual as my daily/winter beater and possibly run it on some sort of alcohol. I've heard that butanol is cheap but has a very low octane rating. I'm pretty new to this stuff, so i just want to see what people think would be the best alcohol to run. And does anyone know where to buy this stuff in NY?
