420# tank to 100# tank

Post by Nitro187 »

I have a quick, and hopefully simple question regarding switching (temporarily) from a 420# tank to a 100# tank....

The 420# tank has only a small 'inner' threading for a connect, where as the 100# tank has both a wide outter threading, as well as an inner one. Do I simply have the gas fitter connect the hose coming off the 420# tank onto the inner threading of the 100# tank? Or is there a different fitting \ adapter he would require?

I'm just trying to cover all tracks before I get to the event, so I'm not caught with my pants down.

Thanks!

You don't say what you are using the tank for. From your description I expect the inner thread on the 420 you refer to is a left hand thread, the same as used to exist on BBQ tanks. The 100 LB tank, as you describe it, has a 1 & 1/4 inch Acme that accepts the newer plastic attachment. In this case the manufacturers of the valve also included the standard inner left hand thread for older equipment that still required it. Your gas fitter should be able to install the hose to the 100 LB inner threaded fitting. Keep in mind that the surface area of the 420 is quite large, approximately 1000 square inches. The 100 LB cylinder has an surface area of 113 square inches. Depending on what you are using the cylinders for the 100 LB cylinder may have trouble keeping up with the demand to convert enough liquid to gas (vapour).

Hey buddy, thanks for your response.

I'm going to an event for three days; so the 100# tank should be able to do the job. Two 420# tanks last me between three and four weeks... that being said, lets assume the three weeks, at 100#'s, I should expect 40# a day, considering I'll only be 'open' Friday evening, Saturday all day, and Sunday all day, I should be ok... but I'll most likely want to re-fill my 100# tank on the Sunday.

Thanks for the info by the way. I'm pretty confident now, after what you said that the only threads to connect to on the 420# tank will be the same threading as the inner threads on the 100# tank. :)
