Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

Dent- I sent you a pm. Gottago -The 4" of vacuum was part of the reason I said maybe an impco vpv. I seen rockcrawlers use it and it seems to help them. Here is one of the plugs I pulled from the 358. The one pictured below is the worst, the best one has less orange tint but still the same idea. The...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

So the vpv might help with the bottom end power, would one be needed in each model e..?....my truck only idles at 4" tho. I wonder if by adding the vpv would it help enough to limit the low end power drop, I guess any would help. For the price of it, its probably worth a try. Would the 425s be bette...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

Dent2- My single x450 with the x-1 works fine but isn't enough for my small block at high rpms, Other than that it works good, I have messed with it a decent amount in the last few years. Your suggestion on your 425s that they work good, I have enough parts to throw my 2 x450s on. The 2 x450s tho mi...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

When I said I had 11-12s under load on the afr it was pinging pretty harsh, I had to back the timing down and add the balance line. Although that was with my current heat range 5 plugs. The new ones are heat range 3 so ill try the timing bump again and see what happens .As said before that might of ...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

When i went for a ride last night the truck ran rather well. It starts easier hot with the model e (just tap the key)but I don't think it runs any different. The throttle is crisp and clear tho, afr #s are slightly richer but it idles much nicer. The plugs im changing asap (today I hope)and im going...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

I did pick up plugs that are 2 steps colder. They are autolite racing plugs, nothing fancy tho. They are short peanut plugs for my angle plug heads, my stockers are heat range 5 and the new ones are a 3. What kind of plug gap should they be gapped to..? I did find a msd hei distributor that a friend...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

Im from the usa, Pennsylvania. I ran the h-420 and it worked good up to a little over 5k. I hope the impco e will do atleast 5k and ill be fine for the last run of the season. I really don't have anywhere to test it either except driving it around. I don't mind doing the 2 carbs but it will have to ...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

In power wise will the x-1 be better than the model e..? Im talking hp rating..? I seen a lot thru searches where there close, Its a simple swap if is that big of difference. The rpms I like to run when needed are from 4-5k. I don't really need above 5000 anyway. Im also on and off of the the thrott...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

As for the cam I cant seem to find the cam card, it is tho 110 lsa with 515 lift. At idle it only has 4 lbs of vac, which is pretty low. That's at 900 rpms, I run a moroso vacuum canister to have decent brakes. Without the canister the pedal is real hard. When I went to full disk brakes and an adjus...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

Remember tho like I said earlier, the can is smaller with less lift/duration than the oval track 358. They run more rpms and do idle at 1,000. With a 750 volley double pumper I could run 6,000 rpm steady after that it would basicly just rev. The msd box works with the unite but there isn't much diff...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

Is it better to run the ignition box or remove it..?..that is one less electrical item. The truck ran fine without it before. I wouldn't doubt the hot plugs aren't helping me any. I'll pull em and see how they look. If bad I'll put the new ones in I picked up yesterday and take it for a good run. I ...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

Usually when running in the mud it depends how thick it is. Sometimes it takes all the pedal I can give it (5,000 for a few min), or its like a big mud puddle and takes nothing. Its pretty noticeable how bad it is when I need to take the transfercase out of high range and use low. Both axles are Det...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

The spark plug is a hard subject, my heads are angle plug so the plugs length has to be short to clear the headers. Ill take a look today and see what heat range they are compared to stock 45s and what I can do in the colder ranges. I know my plugs are close to stock, does that have any effect on th...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

Its also a flat tappet soild lifter cam, I could probably do better with a hei distributor with adjustable vac advance. The 2500 to 6500 was what was on the cam card, it was chosen by the engine builder who did my machining. The pistons are .220 domes with relief cut into them. This motor I have a pi...

Re: x450-x-1 starting probs/rich idle/no power over 4,000rpm

Off hand without the cam card I can only tell u a few things about the cam. It has 515 lift and had a lot of overlap, power range from 2500-6500, the heads have 2.055 valves with 67cc chambers. The timing I have now at 8 degrees initial and prob can go a lot more, I was just worried about it pinging...
