CARB certified CNG kits for big-block TBI engines?

Post by GMChauler »

Howdy all. We're in California, land of the smog tests and home of the CARB stickers. We have a 1989 GMC R3500 truck with a 7.4L TBI-equipped engine.

Are there any readily available CARB certified CNG kits for trucks with these engines? Preferably, one that would allow us to use both gasoline and CNG at our leisure.

Failing that, is there any way to equip our truck with CNG without running afoul of the dreaded smog meisters, short of using a diesel engine swap loophole or something?

Your going to have a hard time finding a supplier of a CARB or EPA approved kit for that year now. Everthing has now moved to port injection in the last 10 years. There were several companies that supplied kits for CNG that were carb certified at the time. You might try emailing them directly to see if they have any US distributors that may still carry them. The ones that come immediately to mind are IMPCO, ECO fuel systems in Langley, BC, Technocarb Systems in Abbotsford BC. Jasper Engines had an Alternate fuel division also and you might also try them. The issue is the electronics that were approved for these vehicles are typically not manufactured any longer, however one of these companies may have components left over. Companies like Autotronics which was part of MSD quit manufacturing the components in the late 90's. IMPCO made some similar electronics and may still be carrying them. There should be several IMPCO dealers in the California state. You might also touch base with Gann Products. They only supply adaptors, hoses and accessories but they should know any dealers that deal in CNG equipment.
