LPG vapour injection project(s)

Post by BigBlockMopar »

I have started to gather parts for my vapour injection plans on one (or both) of my 2 suitable engines; a newerstyle 5.7Hemi and/or 500ci blower motor.
Have been looking at, and comparing plenty of injection vaporisers lately, along with a good amount of injectors.

Because with the blower motor I'm building, I would most certainly need 16 injectors, I have not looked that much at the more expensive injectors made by Prins/Keihin and such.
Maybe with the 5.7Hemi I might be tempted to go with a 'quality' injector, since it will become a daily used engine, but the blower motor is a weekend-toy, so I hope to get by with the lower priced injectors for awhile.

To get things started I went with 2 rails of 4 'Magic III' propane vapour injectors. If I like their workings I'll order up another pair injector rails.
Alongside I also bought two 'Magic III' vaporisers and an 8mm ValTek cutoff valve.
The vaporisers are spec'd at a max 350hp, which is about the same for the injectors if used with their largest nozzles.

I also purchased an Innovate MTX-L lambda-sensor and gauge kit.

Next thing on the shoppinglist is a MegaSquirt controller, to control the injectors with.
For the blowermotor I could get by with a MegaSquirt 2-controller, since I only want to control fuel-injection on this motor.
For the Hemi I would like/need the MegaSquirt 3-controller.

Is this going to be dual fuel, or LPG only. My recent research on LPG injection would seem to indicate that most systems have the car starting and running on petrol until it's warm, and then changing over to LPG. Apparently the gas vapour temperature has to be monitored and the ECU changes mixtures accordingly. I'm not sure if LPG vapour only injection is feasible, I'd love someone to prove otherwise as this is what I was wanting to do to my car, I'll follow this build closely.
Cheers,

Mick.

These systems will be built as LPG-only systems.
None of my cars have gasoline-EFI in them, and I'm not willing to spend time and money on that to get it to work for those mere 5 minutes of runningtime at every coldstart.
If problems with mixtures will arise I will try to deal with them with tuning.
I've seen electric injector-rail heaterkits available would the problem be located there.

The vaporisers and the injector rails both have tempsensors in them.
I'm hoping the MegaSquirt controller can use those sensors to alter fuel delivery appropiately.

Most of the aftermarket injection kits have the ability to tune the cold switchover from gasoline/petrol to LPG. The important thing to remember is to allow the vaporizer to reach operating temperature before any significant load is placed on it. We do NOT want partially vaporized vapor-liquid slurry passing through the injector rail, it might/will damage the injector and will lead to very erratic engine performance.

It would be possible to use an OEM Sequential FI controller and adapt it to your vehicle, then add on an aftermarket Propane fuel injection kit, using the OEM controller to perform the basic air-fuel ratio calculations.

If I had some experience with modernday car-controllers I would want to try that, but my knowledge with OEM-carcomputer stuff is pretty much 0.
So I rather not confuse myself too much with these (for me) unknown blackboxes and just focus on getting an 'accessible' MegaSquirt controller working. I have a lead on a MS-2 for sale locally which I will probably buy on the next couple of days.

Small update on the vapour injection project for my 5.7Hemi;

Recently I bought myself a MegaSquirt 3 with injector- and coildrivers. I think I need to take up knitting first...

When you get done with the blown motor do up a chevy the same way and drop it off over here;) Can't wait to see your results!!!

Only that the 5.7 Hemi engine has been put aside, as the work getting the Hemi-engine (mechanicly) installed in the car, and also its EFI-controls (Wiring/Tuning) is too complex to install fairly 'quickly' in a daily driven car.
I'm afraid my car would be out of commission for a good number of months before everything is said and done, and running.

The Hemi will probably find its place in another project of mine some day.

That's why I've rebuild a 360 engine instead which I can swap over in a weekend and have fun with.
I plan to install the MS3 in the car with this engine and over time, take over functions like ignition and fuel control with the MegaSquirt.
All so I can keep the car running and fall back to the current, original working setup if needed.
