Installation help

Postby Sickcall » Wed Jul 28, 2010 3:16 am

I am installing a used system on my FJ40 and need some guidance. I have a Impco vacuum controlled lock out valve, a modrl E Impco converter, and an Impco mixer on my 350 motor. I do not have a problem with the fuel lines it is the vacuum lines I am unsure about. I am planning on using one vacuum line from the mixer connection up to the vecuum lock valve. It will have a Tee connection to the solenoid on the converter for starting primer fuel. Is this okay to run these together? Does the vacuum lock valve receive full engine vacuum? The power to the primer solenoid will come from the ignition starting circuit so the solenoid is powered when the engine is cranking only. Is this also correct?

I also have one component I have no idea where it goes. It is a small round diaphragm looking piece with a small hole on one side and a vacuum hose connection on the other. On each side of the vacuum connection are 2 electrical connections. I have powered each side up and wired to ground with no results. What is this componenets purpose and where is it installed? It looks like a vacuum breaker type valve?

Thanks for your help.

I don't want to pre-empt anything before I ask, where are you? There are legal reasons for my asking this so I hope you understand.

Welcome to the forum. You can attach a photo to a posting and that would help us identify your mystery component. Are there any markings on this device?

Ah ok, I thought you may have been Australian, if you were I would have had to say go to a registered installer but as your not I don't have to.

I have to go out for a bit, but will help when I can.

No mystery on the diaphragm controlled switch. This was manufactured by Century, part number 140-10. It is used to control an electric style lock off. Manifold vacuum is attached to it and as soon as you crank the engine the diaphragm pulls in a plate that connects the two posts ad sends power to an electric lockoff. This valve can be used on either the power wire or ground wire to control a lockoff. You state that you have an IMPCO style vacuum lockoff which is probably a VFF30. You don't need the 140-10 with this lockoff.

You can connect the primer and the vacuum lockoff to the same hose, but only if you use venturri vacuum at the base of the mixer. Use one of the silver headed screws on the flange portion of the 425 as a vacuum source. Personally I prefer separate vacuum sources for the primer and lockoff, however it is not required unless Cal. has a specific code to use seperate sources.

Missed the question on the primer power. It can be connected to the starter wire or you can use a momentary push button switch. I prefer the starter, however in the case of any flooding the primer would aggravate the issue. A push button allows the primer to be controlled by you. Most times a primer is only required on a cold start. A properly adjusted warm engine starts equally fast with or without a primer.

C3H8, Thank you very much for the information. Yes I am running the VFF30 vacuum valve so I won't need this switch, but it is nice to confirm. I have my buggy running and I am presently tuning the mixer. I do plan to install a secondary momentary switch in parallel with the keyed power. Thank you for the suggestion, David
