another one from Kiwi-land

Post by Unhippy »

hi i just found this forum when looking around for LPG stuff....seems like alot of people here like me that like 'improving' how they are running on propane/lpg.

i'm running a Subaru Brumby/BRAT that i have repowered with a EJ22 2.2 liter engine out of a subaru legacy and a 5 spd full time 4wd dual range transmission out of a subaru RX coupe.

the engine is dedicated LPG with a distributor ignition and all the petrol injection gear removed.
I installed the LPG conversion myself (a BIG no no here...but no one told me until it was too late) 6 years ago...after a couple of tweeks i got it certified and have been pretty happy with it ever since...the only things that have gone wrong have been because of me fiddling with it :D

i have a LOVATO boost capable regulator and a BLOS LPG carb/mixer...best combo ever!!

learning how to tune lpg was an interesting learning curve...when i converted my ute i had put a supercharger on the stock 1800cc engine and found out the hard way that LPG fuel air mixtures tune backwards compared to liquid fuel...i had a slight detonation/pinging...so i turned the fuel up...and burnt a hole in #3 piston 7km later and had sagged crowns in two others...  ....rebuild time lol

i'm on my third motor now (all swapped out to make way for more PAHWAAA lol) and am now hunting up parts to build a proper high compression 11.5:1 motor to take advantage of LPG's high octane

its interesting to find all this information on IMPCO mixer's and regulators as they don't have a good reputation where i am...but i am seeing solutions on here to nearly all the problems that i know plague IMPCO locally...i guess a little bit of knowledge goes a long way.

right thats enough writing for now...i'm off to read more propane porn

Hi from another kiwi ..JAFA.
its interesting to find all this information on IMPCO mixer's and regulators as they don't have a good reputation where i am...
Interesting comment....
The reason is most of our national fleet espec back in the heyday of the 80s was 4 cylinders and small 6s....Which the Italian stuff suited rather well...once one gets up in the sb V8 they are rather limitted and that where IMPCO came in.
Even so If u have beween watching trademe lately there are lpg unitis being sold stating suitable for V8 simily because thats what they come off.
Even on the 4s that are pulling big rpms /hp/ torques ImPCO and techno are a far better option.

And also the so called experts/technicians/installers back then and even today install wack up the intial so the top end of the curve is WAY over advanced and set the COx levels thats it....which has also given LPG a undeservered bad rep for bearings valves , resesetion starter motors.

yeah the Italian stuff is defiantly pretty easy to tune on a 4 cylinder which is the reason i have it...the guy i got my reg from recommended that i look at impco stuff if i start making over 200 crank-hp ....which i'm not making....yet.

the IMPCO vacuum based fuel air ratio control sounds interesting as it would be instantaneous adjustment unlike the steppermotor setups that i have tried without much joy

I've just bought a Lovato boost capable converter to go with my Blos carb. When I get around to fitting it I'll have to pick your brains on how to set it up and tune it. And hopefully further down the track I'll bolt an Eaton M45 on.
Cheers,

Mick.
