The B20 truck, and propane 4x4..

The short story involves "Moby", the great white whale - my '98 Dodge Cummins 1-ton tow rig... Easy enough, I used to park at work in a parking garage, and some people used to whine about the "big stinky diesel truck".. running B20 made the smell far less offensive, as well as the cleansing effect, and the obvious support for our farmers, reduced dependency on foreign fuel, etc...

Though it's about $.10 more a gallon here (mostly because the pump is in the high-rent neighborhood :P ), I still run B20 as much as I can.

As for the Land Cruiser - well, it's a rock-crawling off-road only rig. I've had a quadrajet carb on it since I bought it a few years ago, and though the q-jet is hands-down the best off-road carb, it eventually has its problems at severe angles.... being 30* up and 45* over is no fun when the engine doesn't want to run.

The solution is either electronic fuel injection, or propane. I try to follow the K.I.S.S. principle as much as possible, which is part of the reason more than half my rig runs Chevy parts instead of Toyota. EFI throws KISS right out the window no matter how stripped down and basic you run it... And with a low fuel tank, the pump can still be starved, leaving you no better off than with a carb.

Propane seemed a no-brainer to me. A pressurized fuel delivery system that requires no wires, is stone-simple to adjust, runs great even cold, and works even when the engine has 0 oil pressure? Sign me up! I'm addressing the fuel availability issue by using forklift cylinders.. I'm carrying 2 on the vehicle, and keep the rest back at camp. Since this is a non-road-driven vehicle, I also don't have to pay road fuel tax on something that never sees the road!

Over the winter, I've also been on a quest to lighten the vehicle up, so I have not yet fired the engine on propane, but that time is coming quickly.

Specs are: Chevy 305 v-8, 700R4 transmission, with a 4.7:1 Toyota truck transfer case. Impco 425 atop a Edelbrock performer manifold, Model E, VFF30. Ignition is GM HEI with a Summit high-output coil, the dizzy is being setup with the light advance springs, and I'm sure I'll have questions as I start to tune it in.

Up front, here's the mixer and converter mounted directly to each other, with the lockoff on the firewall. I haven't yet ran the main line from the tanks to the lockoff.. One thing for sure... 90* fittings are your friend. I used 6 of them!

Update - IT DRIVES!!! Now before you guys have a field day.. my new seats aren't in yet, and I wasn't about to wait.

Captured on video, the first time I put it into gear with the auto... My stomach was in knots... and i hit the brakes a little hard... these ain't manual brakes anymore!! :D

Figured I'd update this...

I recently took the rig out, and I must say, the propane is EVERYTHING is was told to be. The engine ran and idled perfectly, regardless of the angle.

After my first trip, I was a little worried about my consumption of 1 tank per day, but it appears after filling the tanks again, that there was either a small leak in the relief valves in the tanks (from sitting empty for a long time), or that I didn't get a full fill.. I ran an entire day on one tank, and I'm still driving around here and there on it...

If your tanks were filled by volume instead of mass you'll get a lot of variation in your mileage per tank depending on the temperature when the tanks are filled.
