Re: 454 efficiency - Maximum CR

I have gone to wot many times with my current setup, especially when doing tuning runs out on the hiway, I just hadn't done it from a dead stop yet. (I'm definitely getting older and mellower with my driving habits, but I'm not dead yet!) Sorry about that comment lol.. didn't mean to impune all tha...

Re: 454 efficiency - Maximum CR

Even after getting it narrowed down to a cam range, there are still multiple ways to skin the cat. Recent post on speed talk from camking.... shorter exhaust duration equals more midrange but tops off earlier.. Where to install the icl can change things a fair bit too. The racers are doing a cam dri...

Re: 454 efficiency - Maximum CR

Hey a discussion!! Eventually a few cam choices will surface. Gotta agree with what was said about establishing a bit of background info for everyone to work with and see from.. as far as.. You made a very good observation about terminology. I might be confusing others in my use of the term "low end...

Re: 454 efficiency - Maximum CR

One of the reasons that I avoided the bbc was that of all the propane conversions I had seen, the bbc seemed to have more problems than the others. Heat issues, head gaskets etc.. I don't know if that was inherent or caused by the propane use. Those were likely just stock engines as well. In the big...

Re: 454 efficiency - Maximum CR

I have limited experience with bbc. Not many of the online sites are all that helpful with propane requirements. Any insight and suggestion from someone knowledgable in this area is helpful imo.. Even Vizard fails to differentiate between liquid and gaseous fuels. The octane charts are helpful thoug...

Re: 454 efficiency - Maximum CR

What cam specs would work best for the intended purpose of this weight vehicle starting with a bbc at 11:1 cr? Even the basic dyno programs are way better than nothing for the generation of torque and hp charts. You can then see the changes from differing cam specs reflected on the same charts. I ha...

Re: 454 efficiency - Maximum CR

Ideas are changing with modern heads etc.. Some engines will respond "differently" than others to compression/ cam/ head combinations. Driving characteristics can be tailored to suit individual tastes to some degree. Even within the range where burb is looking, there is quite a difference in driving...

Re: 454 efficiency - Maximum CR

True but as the optimum max rev range increases, so too does the power band including the midrange If compression is maintained. I up the compression when using a larger cam so as not to bleed off pressure. The engine can be built to handle it. You may loose a small bit at very low rpm but make up f...

Re: 454 efficiency - Maximum CR

If you go higher than approximately 11-1 you will need to be extremely careful with timing I think that's the jist of what burb is looking for... a number to work from.. Safe is one thing too safe another.. Ideal compression ratio seems to vary from one engine to another. Head design, modern fast b...

Re: 454 efficiency - Maximum CR

Hey burb direct from speed talk to the propane forum. Good place to find info and even some experts.. The use of propane as an auto fuel seems to be diminishing and thus much of the posting. Still a few hard cores out there though. In regard compression, there have been discussions on that subject h...

Re: 377 small block chevy, dual 425s, many issues?

Definitely need to address all the minor issues like vacuum leaks etc before you will get anywhere. On the bright side, your cam was a fairly standard street performance stick back in the day and with 12.2 compression meant to run on gasoline it was likely a wider spread. Meaning you should be able ...

Re: 377 small block chevy, dual 425s, many issues?

As noted broflow, you may be pushing the line with 12:1 + compression. Your cam can tame it enough to get past the detonation range but it is close imo. I run a 377 at 12.5:1 compression lately. Iron heads. The cam specs are quite important, the lsa makes a big difference. You have only given durati...

Ha, for those who can't wait, this is a picture of how it began ... https://www.holley.com/products/intakes/hi-ram_manifolds/parts/7540 and this is what you end up with after replacing the top box with the adapter piece... http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/project-cars/sucp-0409-weiand-small-block/

Re: Who's run a tunnel ram and propane?

Its the weiand mini ram with an adapter on top now that replaces the box the gra's were mounted to and mounts two carbs straight up instead. . You can get that base alone to fit most any application. I'll get a photo in the near future.

Re: Who's run a tunnel ram and propane?

The surprising part to me was the low end torque. I expected more up high and it did that too but it was spread through the entire rpm band right from idle to 6000 rpm + . The mid range is phenomenal, extremely responsive. The last setup was more peaky. I haven't done an exact mileage test but it is...
