Re: 86 f150 4x4
Thought I would see if you posted your specs for your truck, this is pretty custom and no wonder you're getting good power and economy! The 370 heads are interesting, I've never seen them put on a 460 block. Do they have lower volume than the 460 heads, did you have them decked down, or is all the c...

Re: Timing gear considerations on 1978 Ford 460
I FIXED MY TRUCK --------------------------- In short - governed Holley carbs are weird and I don't know how they work. Or if they even do. Don't use one, even if you got it for free. Use a proper throttle plate. In long - Was bored last week and decided to work on the truck, figure out why it just ...

Re: Timing gear considerations on 1978 Ford 460
Exactly, with the vac advance disconnected when you put the pedal down it doesn't clatter at all. You get the deep roar and big torque that you'd expect from a 460, and it flies up hills with even the heaviest load behind it. Stock trailer full of animals, 8% hill, zero knock and pulling hard, as lo...

Re: Timing gear considerations on 1978 Ford 460
The knock isn't piston slap/rod knock, it just seems like classic spark knock. The engine is in good shape with even compression ~150psi cold, no oil consumption. In fact the knock is very quiet compared to knocks I've heard on gasoline engines and characterized more by power loss and a light clatte...

Re: Considering building my own add-on feedback system
Not sure I want to mess with the spring tension in the converter, I like to be able to reliably set them back to their factory setting. Just adjusted the one on my tractor last week as it was running rich, turned out the arm had somehow got up too high. Back to stock and back to running great. Will ...

Re: Timing gear considerations on 1978 Ford 460
By can't get vac advance to work, I mean I can't get it to improve either driveability or economy. Already turned the allen key so it would provide the minimum amount of vacuum advance available. When I bought the truck the previous owner had vac advance disabled as well. When I have the vacuum adva...

Considering building my own add-on feedback system
So as I've mentioned before my truck runs forever rich due to its large displacement. I started wondering if I can't get the right gas valve, maybe I could adjust the mixture some other way. I looked at the converter port that's supposed to compensate for turbo boost and noticed it changes the mixtu...

Re: Timing gear considerations on 1978 Ford 460
Any chance you found a source for a 1644 anywhere? I've got good use out of the truck and "decent" economy all summer considering the work I put it to. Hauling hay, stock trailers, equipment on big goosenecks. I put the mech advance back to stock, dialled base timing back to 15 and gave up on the va...

Re: Model E in series or parallel with heater core?
Took a look at it and it's going into the core on the high port, that's how it was when I bought it so I left it that way. Can't expect much from a guy who left a rag in the line I guess, and all the vacuum hoses were also a total mess when I bought it, with a big vacuum leak and the choke stuck on ...

Re: Timing gear considerations on 1978 Ford 460
Hi C3H8, good to see you back on the forum. I've wanted to try one of those gas valves since I built the truck! I've called a bunch of suppliers in Canada and they seem scarce. Ebay vendors of course charge a fortune to ship to Canada and overprice them to start, making the gas valve worth as much a...

Model E in series or parallel with heater core?
I set up my truck in series with the heater flow from the heads->heater core->model E->water pump. Noticed this winter I had poor flow to my heater core resulting in not much heat in the cab. If I shut off the heater fan and waited a few minutes I would get a burst of hot air, implying poor flow. Ne...

Re: Timing gear considerations on 1978 Ford 460
Well, I finally got the new timing set installed. The old chain had a ton of slack in it, though the nylon was still attached to the gear at least. I could push the chain in over an inch without trying. The new double roller chain slides on nice but you can't deflect it at all with your thumb. I dec...

Re: Timing gear considerations on 1978 Ford 460
Finally had time to work on the truck. Haven't changed the cam timing yet but I think I have the spark timing dialled in properly now. Finally upgraded to a dial-back timing light which was very helpful in isolating the contribution from each component, as well as having a tach readout directly on t...

Re: Timing gear considerations on 1978 Ford 460
By vac under throttle blades I assume you mean non-ported i.e. full manifold vacuum? That's a pretty good idea because as you say it will be effectively in as part of the base timing unless the engine is under load. Maybe next time I have it in the shop I'll dial back base to get all in with vac aro...

Re: Why would a propane engine need to "warm up" to idle low?
Makes sense, even though you don't have the liquid fuel issues or need for a choke, the combustion is still being cooled by the chamber walls, resulting in lower pressures. The governed engines compensate with more throttle opening, while the uncontrolled idle of a closed throttle plate is going to ...
